Bolt Breaks his own World Record.... Twice
What a week for Usain Bolt.
Two races. Two world records. Two talented fields left in the dust.
On Thursday, the Jamaican sprinting great captured the 200-meter gold medal in a blistering 19.19 seconds at the world championships in Berlin. His time was 0.11 seconds below the mark he set last year at the Beijing Olympics.
"I am on my way to being a legend," said Bolt, who gritted his teeth and pointed to the clock as soon as his 200 time flashed.
No one among the near capacity crowd at the 70,000-seat Olympic Stadium in Berlin disagreed.
"If Queen Elizabeth knighthooded me and I would get the title Sir Usain Bolt, that would be very nice," Bolt said.
In Sunday's 100-meter race, Bolt won a huge matchup against Tyson Gay in 9.58 seconds — blowing away his own world record by a massive .11 seconds and making Gay seem like a laggard despite setting a U.S. record of 9.71 seconds.
"I got a pretty good start," Bolt said. "I was there at 20 meters and that was it."
It was the biggest change in the record since electronic time was introduced in 1968.

Asafa Powell of Jamaica took bronze in 9.84.
A year ago at the Beijing Games, Bolt was breezing after 70 meters in the 100-meter dash and set a record of 9.69. But on the deep indigo blue track of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Gay pushed him and his own sore groin as far as he could. To no avail.
Gay stayed with him over the first part but once Bolt unfurled that huge stride of his, there was no contest.
"Awesome," Powell said after the two Jamaicans danced a jig to celebrate.
Bolt is now 5 for 5 in major sprint events. He won the gold in the 100, 200 and sprint relay in Beijing's Bird Nest, each time with a world record. Now he is one race away from doing likewise in Berlin.
"I was running my heart out," Bolt said following his 200-meter win. "I got my start right and that was the key."
In other words, no contest.
